How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.
A beam of light is guided over the skin. The light energy is absorbed by areas of high pigment, e.g., hairs, where it transfers as heat energy. The heat energy heats the hair, damaging the follicle. The follicle is then unable to grow new hairs.
Your skin type and hair color play a big role; traditional lasers work best on light skin and dark hair.
Things to do while getting the treatment done
Staying out of the sun. Follow your doctor's advice for avoiding sun exposure, usually up to six weeks before treatment, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
Lightening your skin. Avoid any sunless skin creams that darken your skin. Your doctor also might prescribe a skin bleaching cream if you have a recent tan or darker skin.
Avoiding other hair removal methods. Plucking, waxing and electrolysis can disturb the hair follicle and should be avoided at least four weeks before treatment.
Avoiding blood-thinning medications. Ask your doctor about what medications, such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, to avoid before the procedure.
Shaving treatment area. Trimming and shaving is recommended the day before laser treatment. It removes hair above the skin that can result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.
Laser hair removal is specifically targeted at the hairs instead of the skin due to the pigment content. It targets the hair at the root, damaging and destroying its ability to regrow. Unlike with other methods of hair removal, you will not suffer from painful ingrown hairs or razor burn. You will likely only have to put up with some mild skin irritation for a few hours after your treatment.
